Program

        • Introduction by the chair – HH Judge Barbara Mensah – 17.25 – 17.30

        • Deportation and Human Rights – Richard McKee (Barrister & retired judge of the Upper Tribunal) 17.30 – 18.30
People crossing the Channel in small boats have been much in the news, but from time to time we hear about a murder or some other serious crime being committed by a person who has no right to reside in the UK, and was facing deportation. ‘Why is he still here?’, the newspapers ask. The answer that usually comes up is – the Human Rights Act! This talk will clarify what is involved in the deportation process, and what role is played by the European Convention on Human Rights.

        • Break – 18.30 – 18.40

        • Regulating Artificial Intelligence – Melissa Coutinho (Barrister, Dual practising lawyer, working with GLD and in chambers, tribunal chair involved in regulation of products and professions.) 18.40 – 19.40
Regulating the Robots: An examination of the principles and the framework that needs to be examined in ensuring appropriate regulatory coverage; looking at current legal thinking and legislative processes; and inviting the audience to consider whether they are correct. Come along and be prepared to think critically.

        • Break – 19.40 – 19.50

        • Contested Heritage: Law, Religion and the Slave Trade – Araba Taylor (Barrister, Deputy District Judge and Deputy Chancellor) 19.50 – 20.50

The recent judgment in Re The Rustat Memorial has thrown into the spotlight an issue which affects not just the church, but heritage societies, museums and other institutions which have benefited financially from enslavement. In this talk, Araba Taylor, a Deputy Chancellor herself, reflects on the judgment and its implications and looks ahead to the principles the courts may have to apply in other contexts. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the session.

This webinar also covers 3 hours under the SRA Continuing Competence Scheme
A Certificate of attendance will be provided.
